Looking back on 2020 (what a year)

How was the overall experience of learning Science through ‘Distance Learning’?

I think the overall experience of learning science through distance learning this year, was both fun, and productive. It was fun because of the way in which Mr. Johnston, would make lessons creative, entertaining, and overall, get the best out of a situation like a pandemic. Science class during distance learning has exceeded my expectations, and having a good teacher was one of the main reasons for this success. "tell us a joke for 1 million extra points" Mr.Johnston would say at the start of class, he would understand our problems, and support us when things got hard. Having fun is part of it, but most teachers don't ever get to balance both productiveness and fun at the same time. This science class is not the case: We would have fun while learning, and yet, lessons would extremely productive, people getting their work done, and us, students, constantly helping each other out, in order to make distance learning successful for all of us. Science class has finalized in a great way, and as a student, I couldn't ask for more during these times.

What activities or labs did you enjoy the most?

Now that the semester is over, I have had a variety of labs and activities I enjoyed, but most importantly, I felt motivated by the collaborative discussions, because the topics we touched, and the opinions we all had, made me feel inspired for making a change. I noticed how so many students, and I, had a lot to say about the world, and our ideas were valuable. We got to learn from interesting articles about a current problem in this world: the coronavirus. Something that not many classes are talking about, when it is a crisis that is developing right before our eyes. Getting to talk to my fellow students about what we thought should be done in the world, made this class feel productive, and a lesson that could easily be implemented in our daily lives in the future. In the past, I did not have the best experience surrounding science. This year, I learned how a good teacher, and passionate students, can really change the way you see a school subject.
